Oakley is 14. Like so many young people in Dubai, he loved the freedom of riding his e-bike.
One evening, at around 7.30pm, his father messaged him to say dinner was ready. Oakley did not reply, which was unusual. His father called him.
A stranger answered the phone. Oakley had been involved in a serious accident.
His father drove straight to the scene. When he arrived, Oakley was surrounded by people trying to help and to keep him awake. He had ridden into the back of a large truck.
Oakley was taken by ambulance to a specialist trauma unit. His injuries included severe head trauma, a broken tibia, a dislocated knee, a fractured eye socket, cuts and other injuries. He was placed in an induced sleep so his body could begin to recover.
What the family is choosing to do now is build something positive from the hardest moment of their lives.
This is not about stopping young people from riding. It is about helping them ride in safer places, with better awareness, better protection and a community around them.
